The song is another standard; . Not the '5. 0s either, but one of the reasons many of us still thinks old school songwriting is an under- appreciated art form. Those lovely sweet chords, those chromatic bass lines .. I bow in humble respect. Although I'm not quite the fan of Umphrey's as you, I will admit they seem to be a very enjoyable live act. I haven't seen them live (let's make that clear) but have watched recordings of their live show. Very entertaining, fine musicianship, etc. And no, I don't particularly care for their vocals, but from what I have heard they are better than the . I do plan to catch them live at some point. But when it comes to longevity, I think composition is the key. Sure, they can have some influence on the live performances of future artists, but I just don't see them being a strong influence on the compositions of great artists years down the road. Sounds nothing like c'tail jazz to me - more like an extension of Miles Davis. Sun Shines On Me> Folsom. You will hear a variety of jazz, blues.Blasphemy if that refers to Kirkland's playing. He takes Bill Evans and turns it on another world. Sing a Song of Songs from the same album - that's a killer recording wqith heavy Miles and Brubeck influences. I'm a hardcore Steely Dan nut and musician and Umphrey's is definitely one of the best bands I have ever seen live. I will agree that they are an acquired taste, especially vocally. What they are doing with improvisation IN A ROCK CONTEXT is mind blowing. Their level of communication on stage is absurd and they fly by the seat of their pants every night, with each show consisting of 6. And we're talking WELL- STRUCTURED improvisation happening on the fly. These guys can never . Socially, what Umphrey's Mc. Gee creates is some of the most satisfying sounds I have ever heard live. The songwriting is not on that level by any means. But if we're talking about amazing bands in a live context, I would way rather see Umphrey's than go to a Steely Dan show if I had a choice, and I've seen both bands many, many times. Date: Mon, 3. 0 Jun 2. ETPosted by: Jazzassin. And thanks of course to the o. I prefer jazz- fusion with a harder edge, i. Always have, always will. Jazzassin, listening for the first time to A Helmet of Gnats, they seem to be a good prog- fusion group. Date: Mon, 3. 0 Jun 2. ETPosted by: Jazzassin,by the stream The good news is the legal streaming services are at least improving. Here in Norway we have a subscription based online streaming service called Wi. MPWireless Music Player), quite similar to Spotify, only Wi. MP don't offer an ad- based free version. You have to pay and you don't get commercials. It's owned by the biggest telcom company and the biggest and soon- to- be- the- only music store chain over here. What's new and even better than what most of the others offer. It's not MORE Hi- Fi than your old CD rack, but it IS exactly that: 1. Hz. And this goes for both the PC/Mac version and for the various mobile platforms. Premium is 9. 9 NKR, Hi- Fi is 1. NKRappr. We can like it or not, but this IS the future of music distribution. In a near future there will be no more CD's, vinyl will survive, paid compressed format downloads from the big companies will diminish and the mass market and connoisseur market alike will enjoy millions and millions of songs and albums in CD quality or better, made available at all times. Hell, even the Zappa Family Trust has given in and accepted the deal, so now most of Franks official releases are available there. No big deal for me, I already got most of them, but his family has been amongst the most restrictive. Snarky Puppy does it; artists will sell their music in hi res or at least CD quality by download from independent or their own distribution companies. The tendency is that all artists have to rely more on live performances than album sales for bread, and it will continue. Myself I will probably buy CD's and vinyls for as long as I'm allowed to, but I really, really like the new possibilities as well. Now if only someone would make some good new music, ha ha ha. There's a lot of great new stuff out there. Snarky Puppy is one of my favs, the new Metheny album with Potter on saxes is so great I lack words to describe it. Also, for a modern prog/jazz- hybrid a think Helmet of Gnatsthank you Michaelis awesome. But not a harsh word about the '5. So much great stuff happened back then that have influenced the best of what's been done later. Date: Mon, 3. 0 Jun 2. ETPosted by: Michael, Just to clarify, I never said that music . Lutz, recording quality has improved and vastly at that. KHz, 2. 4- bit recordings are superior to the best vinyl has to offer. Vinyls appeal more to collectors, what with their artsy packaging and gatefold, as well as the warmth of sound produced. Not to downplay vinyls, which I think are great products, well worth the investment. But facts are facts and that sound can easily be replicated in digital. Besides, in the transfer from analog to digital, there is a small degree of distortion. This holds true of digital recordings when you turn the volume way up - there is distortion after a certain point; how soon you notice this depends on the format's fidelity, bit- depth, production quality and of course your sound equipment. In this day and age storage space is a non- issue. An mp. 3 is vastly inferior to a wav, period. We're talking 1. 28- 3. Information in the high and low end is truncated, resulting in severely degraded sonic detail and clarity. Sonic detail is gone and no amount of trickery can get it back. The problem is that people are led to accept compromise in quality far too easily, just so that digital distributors can pinch pennies on storage space and bandwidth. This isn't about audiophile snobbery, it's about the principle of fair and honest business transaction. It's a slap in the face to the consumer who pays a premium and is given far less quality than decades- old technology in return. Lossless audio quality isn't a . We could be enjoying the EXACT quality of the original studio recordings right now. Date: Mon, 3. 0 Jun 2. ETPosted by: Lutz,SF Michael, I see your point, I was referring more to the recordings and the sound quality of then and now , especially from Steve's 7. A lot sounds a bit cranky to me, in spite of warm LP sounds. On the other hand I just listened to Billy Cobham's Funky Thide of things - burned from LP to CD- R no less- and it sounds incredible. Generally I would also say that musicianship and arrangements were stronger then, and a lot what is really strong today was mostly already great back then. With a lot of newer bands, including the one mentioned here by Dean, something is missing for me too and it makes one realize what an incredible time the 7. On the other hand, Circus Money and such is clearly the new millenium and could have never been conceived in the 7. Date: Mon, 3. 0 Jun 2. ETPosted by: chris ,nh man, there's great stuff out there for sure, and i'm not a fan of the tired . Those guys were major, major dorks. Love was one of my favorite bands in high school, and I memorized and could play every note of his first three albums. I'm embarrassed to say that now. It doesn't hold up. Date: Sun, 2. 9 Jun 2. ETPosted by: The Dean,St. Augustine Beach I've never really been a Vette fanand I like the Audibut which car do you think will still be highly collectable 1. I'll ask the same question about Umphrey's and G Love. But do you think, years from now, people will still be talking about them the way we do with the classics from years gone by? Time will tell if what you like today will still be influential and respected many years from now. There is good and crap in any genre/any time period. There was bad and mediocre jazz in the 5. But what we still revere today was the cream of the crop. It served as a major influence for musicians for many years- -- still does. Love or the members of Mc. Gee didn't cite the masters of years gone by as great influences on their music. I kind of doubt many will be pointing to the more modern acts mentioned in 2. Are their transcendent compositions by these bands I should note for future reference? Time makes these decisions. The output of acts such as Umphries Mc. Gee, Thievery Corporation, G Love and others is every bit as good if not better than the old standards. I can understand a nostalgic appreciation for the old stuff.
